Bidwell Park and the fundraiser...

The 'Photos For Haiti' fundraiser is up and running and can be checked out via Facebook HERE.

I did some shooting today. I wanted to try out the new tripod and was really curious about the water levels in the area, so I ran out to Bidwell Park and out by River Road to check out the scene...didn't get too much, but then I only shot for a couple of hours.

Click the link below for the rest of the photos...

With these first two I used a circular polarizer to really maximize the reflections in the pond...if you've been here, you know how brown and gross it is =)

Oh, also ran into these guys in Bidwell:

The creek in Bidwell was pretty high but at least a foot away from breaking out of its banks, so not very interesting. It's supposed to rain for another week so I'll check back in later...I have a couple of shots in mind if it does decide to flood. I saw that it was shaping up to be a nice sunset, so I hurried out to River Rd to see what I could see...not ideal by any stretch of the imagination for a sunset shot, but I did find this:

More shooting to come in the next couple of days =) In the meantime, please, please check out the fundraiser!

Fundraiser for the victims in Haiti

Pick any photo of mine either here or on my website, Facebook, wherever.12"x18" print shipped to your door for $25 with 100% of the profits going to the American Red Cross to help out in Haiti.

That's it. Simple. Great deal for a print and it goes to a good cause. I know it feels like a million miles away but it's the worst disaster our world has ever known. Let's do SOMETHING to help.

Something a little different...

Let me start with this...I am NOT depressed. I am NOT mental. I am aware that today's shoot is quite a bit different from my usual work...

With that out of the way...So...I shot a graveyard today. I know...but this graveyard has intrigued me for as long as I've driven by it which is 12 years, give or take. I've ALWAYS wanted to stop and shoot but never have. I was really hoping for some fog but no luck. Maybe in another 12 years, huh?

Click the link below for more info on this spot and the rest of the pictures.

I think this place has always caught my eye because of its state of disrepair. It's as if it's decaying right along with the guests underground, sharing in the experience...feeling their pain, as it were. It's locked up tight and accessible with special permission only, according to the numerous signs posted by the city of Marysville...

Such an interesting place. As usual, I'm not happy with these shots  (I'm tempted to delete the whole lot) and want to shoot it again...next time from the inside.

Foiled again...

It was a waiting game to get this image. I got in position on Enterprise Bridge (no Star Trek jokes, please), got my camera set up roughly where I thought it would need to be and waited for the sun to set behind the trees…foooor 45 minutes. It was one of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen and a really, really nice wait. I shot this a few ways but decided to show this square composite because I loved all the detail in the foreground with the creek running along in the canyon and the trails from the jets in the upper part of the sky.  With a traditional, one frame, rectangular image I lost one or the other. Thankfully, I recognized this as I was shooting and was able to quickly set up and shoot this one.

So my intention today was to visit a place called “Seven Falls”, just outside of Oroville. I had a GREAT time on the ride out along the windiest, hilliest road ever…I may or may not have gotten air four times…just sayin, I dunno…

I got within a mile and a half of my destination but had to turn back due to snow on the roads. To be honest, I got stuck. Twice. I did manage to make some nice images today, just wish I could have gotten up to the falls.

Oroville is REALLY low. I passed it on the way in and noticed the cool striations in the bank created by the dropping water levels, but was running late to get to the falls and the light wasn’t really ideal. With the falls a bust,  I knew exactly where I was going to be standing as the sun set.

For some reason, I decided to mix it up a little in post today. Got a couple black and whites for you as well as the square, 14 image composite that breaks at least one cardinal rule. I’d love your feedback on that one in particular…

Well, hope you enjoy these. I do have one more image that is really, really cool to share but I need to spend some time with it in post...it was a really tough shooting situation, shooting directly into the sun with snow on the ground. In other words, I botched the shot and it's going to take a lot of work...

Breaking out of a funk...

I fell asleep last night frustrated over some stupid stuff and in a funk. I'm also pretty sure I woke up groaning (no, not because of the New Year festivities!). I've also been treading water for far too long and it's wearing on me. I need some adventure, need to clear my head and need to do some shooting. More after the jump...

So, in typical fashion any time I am suddenly motivated and have an idea (which NEVER happens, btw), I skip breakfast, skip the shower and go straight to the weather reports…ooooops. I’m thinking Lassen. In January. 5700’, it’s below freezing and snow is on the way. Typically hare-brained…brilliant, I'm in.

For those that are curious, I headed up Hwy 32 out of Chico, Hit Hwy 89 going west, then Hwy 36, also west. I stopped and shot whenever I saw something I liked (which is fun, by the way) and tried to stop at 3 waterfalls. The weather cooperated, but there was too much snow on the dirt roads off the highways to hit two of the waterfalls I was hoping for.

Ok now the one waterfall I did manage to get to is something special. Dead Horse Falls is off Hwy 36, about 37 miles or so east of Red Bluff. It was about a 3.5 mile hike today due to the snow, but was pretty easy with the exception of the last .10 of a mile. It sits in a deep, steep canyon that was very wet and slippery from the rain, snow and ice. Fun. These falls are amazing. The location feels so secluded and private because it sits in this narrow canyon...I felt like nobody had ever set foot in it. My own little private sanctuary. Very, very nice.

Unfortunately, it's not going to remain a hidden little gem for much longer. As I approached the waterfall, I was really irritated to discover a quarter mile stretch of devastation...so very sad. I hate logging. Such a beautiful area, just getting ripped to shreds. This posed an additional problem. I've never been to this waterfall before and somewhere in that 1/4 mile stretch of barren land USED to be a trail down into the canyon and to the falls...great. So I go where now, exactly? It was quite an adventure getting in and out, let me tell you.

All in all, an amazing day and a great way to start off the new year!

Ringing in the new year...

First thing, welcome to the shiny new blog! New year, new toys! I'm not entirely sure what direction this thing is going in but I figured that today's activities would be a fitting place to start it off. I imagine it will end up about 80% photography, 10% gear review and 10% insane ramblings just for good measure.

Comments, feedback, suggestions, etc are encouraged and I hope you’ll enjoy my new little corner of the internet.

Since it is the new year and I'm feeling motivated, I'll end this with a quote I received this morning from a new friend:
"A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes." ~Gandhi
I assume it would not be presumptuous to include women in that as well...so what do all you men and women out there want to become this year?

Happy new year, everyone! SEE MORE!
